A Civil Protection Order is a legal document issued by a court that can help protect individuals from domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, harassment, or other forms of abuse. Civil Protection Orders are designed to provide a legal remedy for victims of abuse or harassment, and to help prevent further acts of violence or harassment.
A Civil Protection Order can be obtained through a Domestic Relations court and can be enforced by law enforcement.
To obtain a Civil Protection Order, an individual must file a Petition or a Motion with the appropriate court. Once a Petition or a Motion for Civil Protection Order is filed a Temporary Protection Order hearing will be scheduled to determine if a Temporary Protection Order is appropriate. If the Court grants a Temporary Protection Order, the Court will schedule a Permanent Protection Order hearing no later than 14 days after the issuance of the temporary civil protection order to determine whether the temporary protection order shall be converted into a permanent protection order.
